Kevin Systrom began building Instagram in 2010 at the age of 27 with his friend Mike Krieger. Within a year, 500,000 people a week were signing up for the app’s image-sharing service.
“We crossed 10,000 users within hours, and I was like, ‘this is the best day of my life.’ This is amazing, right?” he says. “At the end of the day, it kept growing so much I thought, ‘are we counting wrong?'”
The duo both went to Stanford University’s and participated in the Mayfield Fellows program. But they didn’t know each other back then, they meet when Kevin made an app on his weekends while he was working at Google.
The app was called Burbn which was an location-aware photo and note-sharing app.
Mike was an enthusiastic early user of Burbn and they got speaking, Burbn evolved into Instagram dropping the note-sharing and sticking to photos.
Only two years later Facebook bought the Instagram for $1 billion in 2012
The duo still continued working for Instagram for 6 years until finally leaving in 2018.
